Memorable Pets: The Smallest Gesture

This week's Monday post features a lovely blog entry over at Dementia by Day, written by Rachael Wonderlin.

Rachael recently opened up a "pet shop", including a handful of Memorable Pets, at her dementia care facility, and has been keeping note of how the residents are responding to the pet shop area and its stuffed animal pets.

"I handed Helen one of the stuffed dogs from our new Pet Shop area. I knew how much she enjoyed the baby dolls we had, so I hoped that she would also like the dogs."

This week's Memorable Monday post once again highlights Michela Paradiso's high school capstone project of 2012, a video compilation that showcases personal stories from those affected by Alzheimer's disease, Alzheimer's in artistic media such as books and film, an explanation of the disease, as well as the work being done by Memorable Pets and Michela's own involvement in the making of her project.

Memorable Mondays: Pets 2 People Program Feature

This week's Memorable Monday post highlights Memorable Pets' Pets 2 People program, which is listed as a featured program for dementia and Alzheimer's assistance at ProgramsforElderly. Through our Pets 2 People program, pets can be donated to patients in nursing homes or care facilities to become faithful companions and bringers of love and comfort. If you choose to purchase a pet through the Pets 2 People program, you will receive via e-mail the name and condition of the patient your pet was donated to, as well as their reaction to the pet upon receiving it. As with all other Memorable Pets purchases, a portion of the proceeds for each pet bought through the Pets 2 People program will be donated to Alzheimer's Research.

Wendy from Rockville, MD gave a Memorable Pet Golden Retriever to her father.  She told us recently “he spent the last several days of his life clutching his doggie”.  This breaks my heart and yet also makes me feel glad he had a Memorable Pet to comfort him!

This week's Memorable Monday post remembers Judy from Long Beach, who bought her mother a Memorable Pet calico cat. Judy's mother loves to hold and pet her stuffed cat. These kinds of bonds between Alzheimer's patients and stuffed animals are very strong and tend to form very quickly. Giving a stuffed pet to a loved one with Alzheimer's or dementia can be a very simple yet meaningful way of adding purpose to their lives.

Julia, a customer of ours from California, says her 95-year-old mother always sleeps with her Memorable Pet golden retriever! Her mother loves her pet dearly and Julia also told us that when she visits her mother with her real life golden retriever, her mother believes it is her dog and asks for Julia to take care of it until she comes home. Memorable Pets have been known to create special bonds like this one.
